The bezel is used by divers to set the time they will have air supply by their oxygen tanks. The diver sets the time on the minute hand of the watch. They can turn the bezel anti-clockwise and not clockwise. This ensures that the diver can’t extend the time he will still have oxygen supply. The grooves in the bezel of the Sealander are large enough so they can also be operated while wearing diving gloves.
We chose for an ceramic insert for the bezel because of 2 reasons. Firstly, ceramic is an extremely hard material that is very hard to scratch. Only materials with the same hardness or higher hardness (diamonds) can scratch the inlay of the bezel. Secondly, ceramic doesn’t change colour like the old fashioned aluminium inserts when it’s exposed to sunlight after some years.
